Research on Hawaiʻi<\/span>\u2019s freshwater resources by University of Hawaiʻi<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a> graduate students was featured at a recent international conference. The students and research assistants with Hawaiʻi<\/span> EPSCoR<\/abbr>‘s ʻIke<\/span> Wai<\/a> project presented their work at this year’s Goldschmidt 2020 conference<\/a>.<\/p>\n

ʻIke<\/span> Wai from the Hawaiian words for “knowledge” and “water,” respectively, is a $20-million project to ensure Hawaiʻi<\/span>\u2019s future water security through an integrated program of research, education, community engagement and decision support.<\/p>\n

The annual international scientific conference organized by the Geochemical Society and the European Association of Geochemistry was held virtually in June and covered several themes in geochemistry to include scientific observations in Hawaiʻi<\/span> and Oceania related to climate change, coral reefs and water resources.<\/p>\n

Three PhD<\/abbr> candidates from the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology\u2019s Department of Earth Sciences<\/a> discussed their work through the ʻIke<\/span> Wai project, funded by the National Science Foundation to conduct research to understand Hawaiʻi<\/span>\u2019s aquifers.<\/p>\n

Trista McKenzie<\/strong>, a Hawaiʻi<\/span> Data Science Institute<\/a> Data Science Fellow alumni, presented a deep learning model that accurately predicts submarine groundwater discharge off of Hawaiʻi<\/span> Island\u2019s Kona coast<\/a> and discussed the benefits of pairing field-based measurements with big-data-driven approaches.<\/p>\n

Brytne Okuhata<\/strong> discussed a multitracer approach using radiocarbon and chlorofluorocarbons to determine fresh groundwater ages on the west side of Hawaiʻi<\/span> Island<\/a>. The data will be used to understand the aquifer system and to enhance their water model\u2019s predictive capabilities allowing for better management of groundwater resources.<\/p>\n

Diamond Tachera<\/strong> discussed groundwater geochemistry results from the Hual\u0101lai aquifer<\/a>, located on the western side of Hawaiʻi<\/span> Island. Tachera discussed how a data-driven method for a better understanding of subsurface properties is needed.<\/p>\n

Data is currently available from the ʻIke<\/span> Wai project<\/a> with more data added regularly.<\/p>\n
