The students and research assistants with <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.edu\/epscor\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>EPSCoR<\/abbr>&#8216;s <span aria-label=\"Ike\">&#699;Ike<\/span> Wai<\/a> project presented their work at this year&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/goldschmidt.info\/2020\/\">Goldschmidt 2020 conference<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Ike\">&#699;Ike<\/span> Wai from the Hawaiian words for &ldquo;knowledge&rdquo; and &ldquo;water,&rdquo; respectively, is a $20-million project to ensure <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s future water security through an integrated program of research, education, community engagement and decision support.<\/p>\n<p>The annual international scientific conference organized by the Geochemical Society and the European Association of Geochemistry was held virtually in June and covered several themes in geochemistry to include scientific observations in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and Oceania related to climate change, coral reefs and water resources.<\/p>\n<p>Three <abbr title=\"doctor of philosophy\">PhD<\/abbr> candidates from the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/earthsciences\/\">Department of Earth Sciences<\/a> discussed their work through the <span aria-label=\"Ike\">&#699;Ike<\/span> Wai project, funded by the National Science Foundation to conduct research to understand <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s aquifers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trista McKenzie<\/strong>, a <a href=\"http:\/\/datascience.hawaii.edu\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Data Science Institute<\/a> Data Science Fellow alumni, <a href=\"https:\/\/goldschmidt.info\/2020\/abstracts\/abstractView?id=2020004842\">presented a deep learning model that accurately predicts submarine groundwater discharge off of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Island\u2019s Kona coast<\/a> and discussed the benefits of pairing field-based measurements with big-data-driven approaches.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brytne Okuhata<\/strong> discussed <a href=\"https:\/\/goldschmidt.info\/2020\/abstracts\/abstractView?id=2020003213\">a multitracer approach using radiocarbon and chlorofluorocarbons to determine fresh groundwater ages on the west side of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Island<\/a>. The data will be used to understand the aquifer system and to enhance their water model\u2019s predictive capabilities allowing for better management of groundwater resources.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Diamond Tachera<\/strong> discussed <a href=\"https:\/\/goldschmidt.info\/2020\/abstracts\/abstractView?id=2020003212\">groundwater geochemistry results from the Hual\u0101lai aquifer<\/a>, located on the western side of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Island.
