Lani Park<\/strong> and <strong>Iona Cheng<\/strong> identified genetic risk variants associated with the amount of fat present in the liver. Researchers were also able to confirm a known association with a genetic variant already reported to affect liver fat. <\/p>\n<p>Fatty liver has become a major public health problem related to obesity. High levels of liver fat are associated with metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, chronic liver diseases and liver cancer. In the <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr>, it is projected that the rise of fatty liver will replace viral hepatitis as the primary risk factor for chronic liver disease.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our discovery of genes associated with liver fat will allow us to better understand the biology of fatty liver and help us to identify individuals at risk for this condition,&rdquo; said Park. <\/p>\n<p>Native Hawaiians and Japanese Americans make up a large proportion of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s population, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2018\/12\/18\/japanese-americans-vulnerable-to-excess-body-fat\/\">previous Multi Ethnic Cohort (<abbr>MEC<\/abbr>) studies<\/a> have shown that these ethnic groups are at greater risk for liver fat and conditions associated with it.<\/p>\n<p>Identifying genetic variants for liver fat, as found in this study, will help in the development of new strategies for the prevention and early detection of various liver diseases and other related outcomes. <\/p>\n<p>The research analyzed data from 1,709 participants of the <abbr>MEC<\/abbr> study, which follows more than 215,000 residents from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and Los Angeles for the development of cancer and other chronic diseases.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Previous studies have shown that Native Hawaiians and Japanese Americans are at greater risk for liver fat and conditions associated with it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":16,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[30],"tags":[218,1363,158,169,9],"class_list":["post-122838","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-research","tag-cancer","tag-manoa-research","tag-publication","tag-uh-cancer-center","tag-uh-manoa","entry","has-media"],"aioseo_notices":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/122838","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/16"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=122838"}],"version-history":[{"count":10,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/122838\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":122899,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/122838\/revisions\/122899"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=122838"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=122838"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=122838"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
