It is a 7.1 percent increase from last year\u2019s total of $426.2 million and the second highest total since 2011\u2019s $488 million. Extramural funding is external investments from governmental agencies, industry and non-profit organizations that support research and training activities conducted by university faculty and staff.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is not only amazing work by our faculty who are developing new insights on every aspect of the world around us,&rdquo; said <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> President <strong>David Lassner<\/strong>, &ldquo;These extramural funds directly create thousands of living wage jobs with economic ripples that help the economy across the islands.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> extramural funding employs more than 10,000 people annually, which is even more critical now as the state\u02bbs number one industry, tourism, has been seriously impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?s=糖心Vlog官方-DOH+Contact+Tracing+Program\">Read more <em><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> News<\/em> stories about the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方-DOH<\/abbr> Contact Tracing Training Program<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;In addition to competing with other research institutions around the country in a very tight extramural funding arena, our people also grappled with the disruptions of the pandemic at work and in their personal lives,&rdquo; said <abbr title=\"university of hawaii\">糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Vice President for Research and Innovation <strong>Vassilis L. Syrmos<\/strong>. &ldquo;I\u2019m so grateful to our faculty, support staff and graduate students for their resolve in these unprecedented times to keep the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> research enterprise on course. The outstanding performance of our flagship <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa campus was especially gratifying.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa accounted for $343.1 million followed by the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> System with $57.2 million, an 8 percent and 16.1 percent increase over last year, respectively. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I&#8217;d like to congratulate the entire <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa research <span aria-label=\"ohana\">&#699;ohana<\/span> for the phenomenal success in securing extramural funding throughout the year and during this extremely challenging period,&rdquo; said <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Interim Vice Chancellor for Research <strong>Velma A. accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen data-no-lazy=\"1\" data-skipgform_ajax_framebjll=\"\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div><\/figure><\/div>\n<li>The <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Cancer Center <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2019\/09\/26\/cancer-center-cutting-edge-research-clinic\/\">received $6.5 million<\/a> from the National Institutes of Health for its <span aria-label=\"Hoola\">Ho&#699;&#333;la<\/span> project that involves the creation of the state\u2019s only Early Phase Clinical Research Center&#8212;that will provide access to clinical research for patients across multiple disciplines and expand the research capabilities of <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.<\/li>\n<li>The <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa College of Engineering received $5.9 million from the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> State Department of Transportation for the deployment and evaluation of an innovative traffic control system to improve safety and traffic flow on Nimitz Highway and Ala Moana Boulevard.<\/li>\n<figure id=\"attachment_122043\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-122043\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/manoa-soest-station-aloha-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Station ALOHA site\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-122043\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/manoa-soest-station-aloha-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/manoa-soest-station-aloha-1-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/manoa-soest-station-aloha-1.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-122043\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Station <abbr title=\"A Long-term Oligotrophic Habitat Assessment\">ALOHA<\/abbr><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<li>The Simons Foundation funded three separate awards totaling $5.7 million for <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology for on-going research at its open ocean time-series station, known as Station <abbr title=\"A Long-term Oligotrophic Habitat Assessment\">ALOHA<\/abbr> that has produced essential ocean scientific data\u2014including ocean acidification.<\/li>\n<li>The 糖心Vlog官方ealthy Initiative under the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> System <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/05\/13\/uh-doh-covid-19-contact-tracing-training\/\">received $2.5 million<\/a> from the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> State Department of Health (<abbr>DOH<\/abbr>) to fund the <abbr>DOH-糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Contact Tracing Training Program in response to the <abbr>COVID-19<\/abbr> pandemic affecting the state.<\/li>\n<li>The Office of Naval Research awarded $1.9 million to the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> System to research various methods to improve inspections, repair protocols and early warning systems of the <abbr>U.S.<\/abbr> Navy\u2019s Red Hill Underground Fuel Storage Facility.<\/li>\n<li>The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention awarded $1.4 million to the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Myron B.
