When the campus closed down in March, the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>&#8211;West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\/music\/strings\/\">University Strings<\/a> ensemble members, who had been rehearsing weekly for their spring performance, quickly transitioned to plan B.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We\u2019re going to create this music from our heart and offer it to our community,&rdquo; University Strings Director and <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Associate Professor <strong>Jon Magnussen<\/strong> told the ensemble over a Zoom meeting.<\/p>\n<p>The ensemble transitioned from holding weekly two-hour in-person rehearsals to online sectional meetings. For Magnussen, this meant four two-hour sectionals a week to cover violins, violas, etc. Members would upload their recorded audio tracks and sectional members would spend time critiquing and refining their performances.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5znJmZf0up4&#038;feature=youtu.be\">See and hear their performance online<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;It\u2019s a very difficult time for our community, and obviously, in this particular instance, we\u2019re lucky that we\u2019re able to keep the music going,&rdquo; said Magnussen. &ldquo;I thought that it was really important for the students to still have this experience of making the music as a part of the whole.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/west-oahu-strings-online-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"U H West Oahu University Strings on zoom\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-118132\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/west-oahu-strings-online-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/west-oahu-strings-online-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/west-oahu-strings-online.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Music 410H students and first violinists <strong>Justin Shimazu<\/strong> and <strong>Alex Kobayashi<\/strong> rose to the occasion. But the new way of making music was not without its challenges.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I just hate recording with just all my family members moving around the house. They just can\u2019t be quiet,&rdquo; Shimazu shared from his garage during a Zoom meeting with the ensemble.<\/p>\n<p>For the final version of the challenging spring program, each ensemble member recorded their part individually, while playing to a click track, then Magnussen blended the recordings together for the final ensemble performance, with guest pianist Katy Luo.<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> University Strings spring 2020 program included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5znJmZf0up4&#038;feature=youtu.be\">Keyboard Concerto in E Major <abbr>BWV<\/abbr> 1053, <abbr title=\"movement\">Mvt<\/abbr>. <abbr title=\"one\">I<\/abbr> Allegro<\/a>&#8212;by J.S. Bach<\/li>\n<li>Pavane&#8212;by Gabriel Faur\u00e9 (<abbr title=\"arranged\">arr.<\/abbr> Magnussen)<\/li>\n<li>Ka <span aria-label=\"Ie\">I&#699;e<\/span> Kuku &#8211; The Kapa Beater&#8212;by Magnussen<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;We\u2019re training for a lifelong love of continuing to make music and participate and make music and have that joy,&rdquo; said Magnussen.<\/p>\n<p>While feeling fortunate that <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> was able to give this musical gift to the community, his thoughts are with the larger arts &#699;ohana during pandemic.
