Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>), the circumstances of <abbr title=\"coronavirus 2019\">COVID-19<\/abbr> have brought out the best in its <abbr title=\"medical doctor degree\">MD<\/abbr> 2020 and <abbr>MD<\/abbr> 2021 classes. Members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gold-foundation.org\/programs\/ghhs\/\">Gold Humanism Honor Society<\/a> (<abbr>GHHS<\/abbr>) are paying it forward and launched the Aloha-19 Project, providing cards and care packages to 62 <abbr>MD<\/abbr> 2019 graduates, now interns working on the frontlines of the pandemic in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and in other states. <\/p>\n<p>The Aloha-19 Project was brought to fruition with the intent of helping <abbr>MD<\/abbr> 2019 graduates &ldquo;boost morale and let them know we are thinking of them, thankful for their service, and so, so proud and in awe of them,&rdquo; said <strong>Shelly Wong<\/strong>, <abbr>MD<\/abbr> 2021 student and <abbr>GHHS<\/abbr> member. &ldquo;I was so saddened by the <abbr>COVID-19<\/abbr> situation and specifically thinking of the Class of 2019 and how this must make their intern year&#8212;an already difficult year&#8212;exponentially more stressful.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Sending aloha<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/manoa-jabsom-ghhs-packages-2.jpg\" alt=\"care packages\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-117471\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/manoa-jabsom-ghhs-packages-2.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/manoa-jabsom-ghhs-packages-2-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/manoa-jabsom-ghhs-packages-2-93x130.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> honor society will be sending &lsquo;aloha&rsquo; to 62 interns&#8212;almost the entire <abbr>MD<\/abbr> 2019 class. <\/p>\n<p>Outgoing <abbr>GHHS<\/abbr> President <strong>Kayla Murata<\/strong> and incoming President <strong>Lucia Amore<\/strong> found ways to support the initiative. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We\u2019ve all been working to make this project happen,&rdquo; Amore said. &ldquo;We\u2019re lucky in that we have a solid <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> <span aria-label=\"ohana\">&#699;ohana<\/span> behind us. Our <abbr>GHHS<\/abbr> chapter advisor, Dr. Damon Lee, has been supportive in helping us figure out the logistics of assembling these care packages in socially distant compliant ways.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The feedback from some of the <abbr>MD<\/abbr> 2019 class was that of gratitude: <\/p>\n<p><strong>Laura (Kurata) Ling:<\/strong> &ldquo;Thank you guys so much for doing this! My husband [MD 2019] Carlthan is on the special <abbr>COVID<\/abbr> team at his hospital and I\u2019ve been working in the <abbr title-=\"intensive care unit\">ICU<\/abbr>, which is almost exclusively ventilated <abbr>COVID<\/abbr> patients. Any encouragement would be much appreciated. Super proud to be part of the <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> <span aria-label=\"ohana\">&#699;ohana<\/span>!&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Casey Young:<\/strong> &ldquo;Aloha, from New York. Our city has been devastated by <abbr>COVID<\/abbr>. All the warmth and thoughts from afar really do help us stay strong.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Support such as Aloha-19 is a component of the Arnold P. Gold Foundation, &ldquo;&#8230;to nurture and preserve the tradition of the caring physician.&rdquo; Established in 2002, the Gold Humanism Honor Society members model the humanistic qualities of integrity, excellence, compassion, altruism, respect, empathy and service. <abbr>GHHS<\/abbr> recognizes the practice of patient-centered medical care.
