They are making modifications to their operations due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation. One of four <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa student media programs, <em>Ka Leo<\/em> is the main content contributor to M\u0101noa Now, the program\u2019s award-winning mobile application. The app has a new look for its more than 20,000 subscribers as staff members have transitioned to provide COVID-19 coverage.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<em>Ka Leo<\/em> has always served as a student voice for the university, and that has not changed,&rdquo; Editor in Chief <strong>Chavonnie Ramos<\/strong> said. &ldquo;The COVID-19 situation has helped enhance our responsibility as a news organization to be that voice. Besides maintaining its website, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kekalaheanews\">Twitter<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ke.kalahea\">Facebook<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/kekalahea\/\">Instagram<\/a>, <em>Ke Kalahea<\/em> works with <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/campuscenter\/radio\/\">University Radio Hilo<\/a> to stream content on air, and still prints its monthly issues with changes. Circulation has been reduced by 50 percent due to less foot traffic on campus. Staff members distribute grab-and-go tote bags and merchandise with copies of the issue, student housing helps to distribute bags with issues to on-campus residents, and <em>Ke Kalahea<\/em> is offering shipping of issues to students away from campus.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our mission at <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Hilo is to uphold the freedom of press, exchange ideas and express the voice of the student body, while providing a forum for journalistic communication and training to students in all areas of the news publication operation,&rdquo; Editor in Chief <strong>Rosannah Gosser<\/strong> said. &ldquo;With the COVID-19 crisis, our mission has not changed, and we have been doing our best to report on the current crisis&#8217; impacts to our community and illuminate individual student voices affected by the circumstances.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2><em>The Hoot<\/em> (<abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>)<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Michelle Zheng<\/strong>, editor in chief for <a href=\"https:\/\/issuu.com\/uhwothehoot\"><em>The Hoot<\/em><\/a> student newspaper, said her staff has adjusted to the COVID-19 situation by conducting interviews through video calling platforms like Zoom. &ldquo;The good part about doing things digitally was having the details of the interviews recorded for easy access. However, the missing one-on-one in-person contact made it feel disconnected.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The mission of <em>The Hoot<\/em> hasn\u2019t changed. Zheng said her staff still strives to provide an entertaining and informative paper for 糖心Vlog官方 West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> students. She said when they were first informed of the COVID-19 situation, engagement was the top concern. Staff members still engage their readership through their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TheHootPress\/\">Facebook<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/thehootnews\/\">Instagram<\/a> pages. Staff members said they worked hard to plan activities for students like raku pottery making, an art gallery, a musical concert and a poetry reading. They look forward to hopefully hosting the festival in fall 2020. Currently, they are focused on creating new content and videos for their website and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/hcckala\">YouTube page<\/a>, according to staff members <strong>Allan Salvador<\/strong>, <strong>Kristofel Abella<\/strong>, <strong>Alyssa Baligad<\/strong> and <strong>Sadie Fetui<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Fetui said the team is able to help out the Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr> community &ldquo;by keeping students entertained, informed of what&#8217;s going on with their campuses and in the world, and maybe even give a little positive hope while they struggle to deal with difficult times and keeping up with their lives.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2><em><span aria-label=\"Kapio\">Kapi&#699;o<\/span> News<\/em> (<span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>)<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_116920\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-116920\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/kapiolani-kapio-staff-photo-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"three people smile for camera\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-116920\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/kapiolani-kapio-staff-photo-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/kapiolani-kapio-staff-photo-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/kapiolani-kapio-staff-photo.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-116920\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em><span aria-label=\"Kapio\">Kapi&#699;o<\/span> News<\/em> staff members<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Estefania Magdalena<\/strong>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapionews.com\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kapio\">Kapi&#699;o<\/span> News<\/a> staff writer, said the organization\u2019s mission to keep its student community informed has grown stronger during the COVID-19 pandemic. &ldquo;The student newspaper connects us and is a space of opinion and creativity. Students are interacting more on our social networks, and there are more people who know us.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The staff maintains its <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/thekapionews\">Twitter<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/thekapionews\/\">Facebook<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/thekapionews\/\">Instagram<\/a> pages despite having to modify operations. Editor in Chief <strong>Gerald Soria<\/strong> said it will release previously designed print pages, digitally, through Leeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr> student life\u2019s weekly emails to students. <em>Ka <span aria-label=\"Manao\">Mana&#699;o<\/span><\/em>\u2019s staff will publish more content on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ka_Manao\">Twitter<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/ka_manao\/\">Instagram<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/kamanao.leewardcc\/\">Facebook<\/a>, and has dedicated a new page to <a href=\"https:\/\/issuu.com\/kamanaoleewardcc\">creative writing<\/a>. Soria has also worked with his team to fulfill a newly created mission to &ldquo;promote the rights of free speech in journalism and fostering the growth of students in creative fields.&rdquo; Many of these changes were implemented after <em>Ka <span aria-label=\"Manao\">Mana&#699;o<\/span><\/em> advisor <strong>Stanley Lee<\/strong>, Soria and other student editors attended the Associated Collegiate Press College Journalism Convention in San Francisco in late February. There was, however, one challenge that Soria has had to overcome.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Safety is paramount during this pandemic. While many roles in a publication can be done online, photographers are at most risk in times of a pandemic. While some would risk going out to take photos for a news article, it is imperative that extreme precaution is taken as well as consent from the photographer,&rdquo; Soria said.<\/p>\n<h2><em><span aria-label=\"Hooulu\">Ho&#699;oulu<\/span><\/em> (<abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Maui College)<\/h2>\n<p>Despite COVID-19, <a href=\"https:\/\/maui.hawaii.edu\/hooulu\/\"><em><span aria-label=\"Hooulu\">Ho&#699;oulu<\/span><\/em><\/a> is sticking to its mission: &ldquo;to be a source of community and campus information for our students.&rdquo; To fulfill it, <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Maui College\u2019s student newspaper has made a few changes, according to Editor <strong>Sarah Gudmunson<\/strong>. Because campus events have been canceled, writers need to pitch other story ideas and interview subjects via email instead of in-person. Staff members also had to postpone taking over a campus bulletin board to broadcast updates.<\/p>\n<p><em><span aria-label=\"Hooulu\">Ho&#699;oulu<\/span><\/em> still maintains its online newspaper, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/糖心Vlog官方MauiNews\/\">Facebook<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/uhmc.student.news\/\">Instagram<\/a> pages.<\/p>\n<h2>Ka <span aria-label=\"Ohana\">&#699;Ohana<\/span> (Windward <abbr>CC<\/abbr>)<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kaohana.windward.hawaii.edu\/\">Ka <span aria-label=\"Ohana\">&#699;Ohana<\/span><\/a>, Windward <abbr>CC<\/abbr>\u2019s student newspaper, will publish its final spring issue on April 28 through its website, as classes have moved online and foot traffic has decreased across campus.
