They are two out of only 59 electrical engineering students selected nationwide.<\/p>\n<h2>Nicholas Yama<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Nicholas Yama<\/strong> is in his final semester at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa and is scheduled to be a <abbr title=\"doctor of philosophy\">PhD<\/abbr> student at the University of Washington in fall 2020. Yama said the funding will cover his educational and living expenses.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_115347\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-115347\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/manoa-engineering-nick-yama.jpg\" alt=\"Nick Yama&#039;s headshot\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-115347\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/manoa-engineering-nick-yama.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/manoa-engineering-nick-yama-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/manoa-engineering-nick-yama-93x130.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-115347\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nicholas Yama<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;Beyond the financial security it provides, it also alleviates the stress on my <abbr>PhD<\/abbr> advisor to find funding for me from their own grants,&rdquo; Yama said. &ldquo;This means that I&#8217;ll be able to be more flexible with what projects I work on what research interests I can pursue.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Yama said he is considering a career path in research due to his experiences with <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s Vertically Integrated Projects in microbiotics and liquid-metal electronics, and his advisors <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Professors <strong>Wayne Shiroma<\/strong> and <strong>Aaron Ohta<\/strong>. One of his projects was to characterize the electronic properties of sodium hydroxide (<abbr>NaOH<\/abbr>).<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The <abbr>NaOH<\/abbr> enables us to reconfigure the liquid metal electronically but we weren&#8217;t sure exactly how it affected the performance of the devices (in the lab),&rdquo; Yama said. &ldquo;Our work measured the relevant electronic properties, fitted it to theoretical models and used the data to simulate devices using software. Using the results of this project, we&#8217;ve been able to design a liquid-metal device and are hoping to apply it to other domains where liquid metal can be used.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Kevin Kam<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Kevin Kam<\/strong> graduated from <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa in 2017 and is currently a <abbr>PhD<\/abbr> student at Columbia University.
