The latest presentation at Windward Community College\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/windward.hawaii.edu\/campus-life\/arts-entertainment\/paliku-theatre\/\">Palik\u016b Theatre<\/a> runs March 13&#8211;22.<\/p>\n<p>Staging the poems from Tonouchi\u2019s award-winning poetry book <em>Significant Moments in da Life of Oriental Faddah and Son<\/em> (Bess Press), the play investigates what it means to be Okinawan in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, highlighting the values of the Uchin\u0101nchu (Okinawan immigrants and their descendants in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>), and reflecting on paternal relationships.<\/p>\n<p>Play director <strong>Taurie Kinoshita<\/strong> said, &ldquo;One of the themes is the difference between mainland Asian Americans and Orientals in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>. I find it profoundly beautiful that in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> we are lucky enough to have a sense of humor about ethnicity. When we laugh at things together, instead of censoring ourselves, it is empowering. Mainland Asian Americans do not have the luxury of speaking openly about race; here, we can have peaceful conversations without fear.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Tonouchi is the playwright of <em>Uchina Aloha, Da Kine Space, and Gone Feeshing,<\/em> which have all been presented by Kumu Kahua Theatre. Kinoshita most recently directed <em>Stories of K\u016bpuna<\/em> at Palik\u016b Theatre, <em>Macbeth<\/em> for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Shakespeare Festival, and <em>Way of a God<\/em> at Kumu Kahua Theatre. <\/p>\n<p>The cast includes Brandon Hagio, <span aria-label=\"Pookela\">Po&#699;okela<\/span> Award recipient for <em>Da Beer Can Hat<\/em> (Kumu Kahua Theatre), Meenakshi Kutty featured in <em>Once<\/em> (Manoa Valley Theatre), Manuel A.
