Silva, right, recognized at the 2019 Ka Palapala <span aria-label=\"Pookela\">Po&#699;okela<\/span> awards.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Two noted political science professors in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.socialsciences.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Social Sciences<\/a> at the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a> have won 2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaiipublishers.org\/awards.html\">Ka Palapala <span aria-label=\"Pookela\">Po&#699;okela<\/span> awards<\/a> from the <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaiipublishers.org\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Book Publishers Association<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Noelani Goodyear-<span aria-label=\"Kaopua\">Ka&#699;&#333;pua<\/span><\/strong> political science department chair, edited <a href=\"https:\/\/uhpress.hawaii.edu\/product\/na-wahine-koa-hawaiian-women-for-sovereignty-and-demilitarization\/\"><em>N&#257; W&#257;hine Koa: Hawaiian Women for Sovereignty and Demilitarization<\/em><\/a> (<abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½<\/abbr> Press, in association with <span aria-label=\"Hawaiinuiakea\">Hawai&#699;inui&#257;kea<\/span> School of Hawaiian Knowledge), which tied for first place in the Hawaiian language culture and history category.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Noenoe K. Silva<\/strong> won first place in the category of <em>Aloha from Across the Sea<\/em> (out-of-state publishers) for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dukeupress.edu\/the-power-of-the-steel-tipped-pen\"><em>Power of the Steel-tipped Pen: Reconstructing Native Hawaiian Intellectual History<\/em><\/a> (Duke University Press).<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are delighted that our faculty have been honored for their excellence in academic writing and editing,&rdquo; said College of Social Sciences Dean <strong>Denise Eby Konan<\/strong>. &ldquo;Noelani and Noenoe regularly impart their considerable knowledge of political science with students in the classroom and now, through their award-winning books, can share their valuable insight with the community and the world.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>More about the books<\/h2>\n<p>Goodyear-<span aria-label=\"Kaopua\u2019s\">Ka&#699;&#333;pua\u2019s<\/span> winning title, <em>N&#257; W&#257;hine Koa<\/em>, documents the political lives of longtime activists <strong><span aria-label=\"Moanikeala\">Moanike&#699;ala<\/span> Akaka<\/strong>, <strong>Maxine Kahaulelio<\/strong>, <strong>Terrilee <span aria-label=\"KekoolaniRaymond\">Keko&#699;olani-Raymond<\/span><\/strong> and <strong>Loretta Ritte<\/strong>. The judges recognized that the book\u2019s &ldquo;text and visual components are skillfully crafted and edited, allowing readers to deeply connect with the personal narratives, photographs, news articles and other primary sources shared by the co-authors.&rdquo; The panel also noted the book &ldquo;provides an important contribution to scholarship about the Hawaiian Renaissance and the leadership of Hawaiian women in exercising aloha <span aria-label=\"aina.\u201d\">&#699;&#257;ina.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The category co-winner was <em><span aria-label=\"Hooulu\">Ho&#699;oulu<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i:<\/span> The King Kal&#257;kaua Era<\/em> by Healoha Johnston (Honolulu Museum of Art).<\/p>\n<p>Silva\u2019s winning title, <em>Power of the Steel-tipped Pen<\/em>, spotlights the writings of Joseph <span aria-label=\"Hoonaauao\">Ho&#699;ona&#699;auao<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Kanepuu\">K&#257;nepu&#699;u<\/span> and Joseph <span aria-label=\"Mokuohai\">Moku&#699;&#333;hai<\/span> Poepoe. The judges commented that the book as &ldquo;a crucial step in any journey that aims to understand the breadth and depth of Kanaka <span aria-label=\"Oiwi\">&#699;&#332;iwi<\/span> thought.&rdquo; Silva\u2019s personal interests include recovering Kanaka Maoli history and literature through reading the under-used texts in Hawaiian from the 19th and early 20th centuries.
