Long.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at Hilo<\/a> undergraduates participating in a campus program that supports under-represented students interested in biomedical and behavioral sciences presented their research at a national conference in November.<\/p>\n<p>The students are part of the Students of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Advanced Research Project, commonly called the <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/sharp\/\"><abbr>SHARP<\/abbr> program<\/a>, which is funded by the National Institutes of Health (<abbr>NIH<\/abbr>) Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement and administered through the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Hilo <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/depts\/anthropology\/\">Department of Anthropology<\/a>. The program supports all under-represented <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Hilo students, particularly Native Hawaiians and Pacific islanders. <abbr>SHARP<\/abbr> develops interest and competence in biomedical and behavioral sciences research and helps students to advance to doctoral studies. Currently, <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Hilo is the only school in the state of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> that has a <abbr>SHARP<\/abbr> program.<\/p>\n<h2>First time presenting<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_107856\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-107856\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/hilo-sharp-program-allen.jpg\" alt=\"Lenard Allen\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-107856\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/hilo-sharp-program-allen.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/hilo-sharp-program-allen-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/hilo-sharp-program-allen-93x130.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-107856\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lenard Allen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For many of the students, the trip the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abrcms.org\/#\">Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students<\/a> held in Anaheim, <abbr title=\"California\">Calif.<\/abbr>, was their first time presenting off-island at a major conference. <strong>Lenard Allen<\/strong>, the <abbr>SHARP<\/abbr> coordinator, said such experiences are necessary because they place the students in new situations and force them to communicate their work with strangers, which builds their confidence.<\/p>\n<p>Allen said attending the conference, watching the different speakers and networking are keys to the students\u2019 success and opens doors. &ldquo;Some of our students were offered jobs during the conference,&rdquo; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Approximately 5,500 participants representing more than 350 institutions attended the four-day conference. Undergraduates and early researchers were invited to showcase their work through poster or oral presentations, representing 12 disciplines within the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (<abbr>STEM<\/abbr>) fields.<\/p>\n<h2>More about <abbr>SHARP<\/abbr><\/h2>\n<p><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Hilo students in the <abbr>SHARP<\/abbr> program receive faculty mentoring, paid research assistantships and access to conferences and networking. <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Hilo students who have been part of this program have received admissions to advanced degree programs at such schools as Stanford University, the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa John A.
