Payongayong left school with the intention to work full-time to financially support her family and give her younger siblings the opportunity of higher education. After three years, she knew there was more to life than the day-in, day-out drudgery.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;When you\u2019re doing the daily (work) grind for years, you wonder, is this really all that there is?&rdquo; recalled the Kapolei resident, 27. &ldquo;That\u2019s when it clicked. I thought, I probably should go back to school to open the opportunity of something more.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Payongayong enrolled in the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>&#8211;West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> in fall 2017, and two years later, she will receive that &ldquo;something more&rdquo; in the form of a college diploma. At the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> fall commencement ceremony on December 14, she will graduate with a bachelor of applied science with a concentration in psychology.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_107480\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-107480\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/west-oahu-jo-ann-payongayong-2.jpg\" alt=\"payongayong siblings\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-107480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/west-oahu-jo-ann-payongayong-2.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/west-oahu-jo-ann-payongayong-2-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/west-oahu-jo-ann-payongayong-2-93x130.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-107480\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> senior Jo-Ann Payongayong, right, and her siblings.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Payongayong\u2019s time at <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> didn&#8217;t come without any obstacles, one of the biggest being a major car accident in Las Vegas on August 4&#8212;right before the start of her last semester.<\/p>\n<p>Payongayong and her cousins were on their way to California when the car they were in was T-boned by a big rig. Payongagong suffered two fractured bones in her back. It took months for her to physically and mentally heal, but she persevered.
