  {"id":105615,"date":"2019-10-31T12:52:26","date_gmt":"2019-10-31T22:52:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=105615"},"modified":"2019-10-31T12:52:26","modified_gmt":"2019-10-31T22:52:26","slug":"agricultural-environmental-awareness-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2019\/10\/31\/agricultural-environmental-awareness-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"Agricultural community event expected to draw hundreds"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_105597\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-105597\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/manoa-ctahr-agday2.jpg\" alt=\"students\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"size-full wp-image-105597\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/manoa-ctahr-agday2.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/manoa-ctahr-agday2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/manoa-ctahr-agday2-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-105597\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students at the 2018 Agriculture and Environmental Awareness Day<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Busloads of elementary school students and teachers will descend on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/ougc\/\"><span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Urban Garden Center<\/a> in Pearl City on Friday, November 1, for a morning of hands-on exhibits and fun activities as part of Agriculture and Environmental Awareness Day.<\/p>\n<p>The annual event, hosted by <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources<\/a> (<abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr>), is an opportunity for keiki to learn about food production and environmental sustainability, and explore a possible career in agriculture and environmental studies&#8212;right here in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>.<\/p>\n<h2>Exhibits and events<\/h2>\n<p>State agencies, nonprofits and community groups will join <abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr> to present information about xeriscape gardening, fruit growing, invasive species, nutrition for wellness and more.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The kids will have lots of fun,&rdquo; says <abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr> Extension Agent <strong>Joshua Silva<\/strong>. &ldquo;They\u2019ll take home a greater awareness about the world around them, where their food comes from and the impacts we have on the environment. They\u2019ll meet our faculty and staff, plus our partners in government and community organizations, and see that there are very exciting careers in agriculture and the environment.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, November 2, the Urban Garden Center will be open to the public featuring many of the same exhibits, along with a plant sale and annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arbordayhawaii.org\/\">Arbor Day<\/a> Tree Giveaway. One free tree will be given per family while supplies last. The plant sale will feature herbs, vegetable starts, succulents and more. Students who attend both days will receive a special prize.<\/p>\n<p>The 30-acre Urban Garden Center is owned and operated by <abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr>.
