That is a 9.2 percent increase over the $368.3 million in extramural funding <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> brought in last year. Extramural funding is external investments from governmental agencies, industries and non-profit organizations that support research and training activities by university faculty and staff.<\/p>\n<p>The research and innovation supported by the funding help to increase knowledge and provide solutions to improve the quality of life in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Funding increases were seen at every level of <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr>, from community colleges to all three four-year campuses.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> System: $48.3<abbr title=\"million\">M<\/abbr>&#8212;35.8 percent increase<\/li>\n<li><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa: $314.5<abbr title=\"million\">M<\/abbr>&#8212;4.5 percent increase<\/li>\n<li><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Hilo: $17.1<abbr title=\"million\">M<\/abbr>&#8212;32.7 percent increase<\/li>\n<li><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>: $8.2<abbr title=\"million\">M<\/abbr>&#8212;36 percent increase<\/li>\n<li><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Community Colleges: $33.6<abbr title=\"million\">M<\/abbr>&#8212;9.7 percent increase<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/system-research-extramural-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/system-research-extramural-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Student working in a lab\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-102799\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/system-research-extramural-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/system-research-extramural-1-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/system-research-extramural-1-630x353.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/system-research-extramural-1.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In federal funding alone, <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> brought in $280.4 million in <abbr>FY<\/abbr>2019, an increase of more than $30 million from the previous fiscal year\u2019s tally of $247.7 million.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;During the last few years, the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, like most research institutions across the country, has had to endure the ebbs and flows in the extramural funding arena,&rdquo; <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Vice President for Research and Innovation <strong>Vassilis L. Syrmos<\/strong> said. &ldquo;In spite of this difficult environment, the dedication and hard work of our faculty, support staff and students all contributed to making <abbr>FY<\/abbr>2019 end on a high note for the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> research enterprise.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Programs and personnel attracting the attention of funders include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Five junior researchers at <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, who received <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2019\/01\/21\/environmental-microbiomes-human-health-link-grant\/\">an award of $10.4 million<\/a> from the National Institutes of Health\u2019s Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence. The funding supports the first center focusing on the interface between environmental microbiomes and human health.<\/li>\n<li><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2019\/05\/17\/nsf-grant-for-native-hawaiian-students-and-stem\/\">received $2.5 million<\/a> from the National Science Foundation\u2019s Tribal Colleges and Universities Program for its <span aria-label=\"Pukoa\">P&#363;ko&#699;a<\/span> Kani <span aria-label=\"Aina\">&#699;&#256;ina<\/span> project. The project will enhance <abbr title=\"science, technology, engineering and mathematics\">STEM<\/abbr> education and create a <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> ecosystem at <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> by providing a <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> pipeline from high schools, community colleges and from its own campus to careers and post baccalaureate education. <\/li>\n<li><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Maui College, which received <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2019\/02\/28\/uh-maui-college-stem-scholarships\/\">a $1 million award<\/a> from the National Science Foundation for its Project <span aria-label=\"Kaihuwaa\">Kaihuwa&#699;a<\/span>. The program aims to increase the academic success of low-income, talented students and improve overall retention, graduation and transfer rates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>About <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> research<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/research\/\">Research conducted by <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr><\/a> impacts the quality of life in the islands and around the world. As the state\u2019s major research university, and because of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s tremendous geographic diversity, <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> plays a prominent role in the state\u2019s economic growth and development through its diverse and world-renowned research and innovation programs in astronomy, earth and ocean sciences, medicine and tropical agriculture.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, the flagship campus of <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr>\u2019s ten-campus system, is one of 115 universities, out of the 3,000 nationwide, to hold the distinction of being a Carnegie Research 1 university.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa is currently ranked 52 out of the top 400 public institutions of higher education when it comes to total research and development expenditures&#8212;federal government, state and local government, business, non-profit organizations and institutional sources.
