  {"id":10082,"date":"2012-09-21T16:16:22","date_gmt":"2012-09-22T02:16:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=10082"},"modified":"2021-02-23T13:26:33","modified_gmt":"2021-02-23T23:26:33","slug":"uh-consortium-awarded-12-7-million-for-job-training","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2012\/09\/21\/uh-consortium-awarded-12-7-million-for-job-training\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> consortium awarded $12.7 million for job training"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_10091\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10091\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/whitenissan.jpg\" alt=\"A white Nissan Leaf electric vehicle\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10091\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/whitenissan.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/whitenissan-260x173.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10091\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Food innovation and safety, sustainability and electric vehicles are some of the programs of focus for a new workforce development and job training effort led by <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Maui College, <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maui.hawaii.edu\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Maui College<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kauai.hawaii.edu\"><span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> Community College<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.hawaii.edu\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Community College<\/a> have been awarded $12.7 million from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dol.gov\">U.S. Department of Labor<\/a> for workforce development and training in rural <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Chancellors <b>Clyde Sakamoto<\/b>, <b>Helen Cox<\/b> and <b>Noreen Yamane<\/b> created the &ldquo;Rural <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>&rdquo; consortium to pool their efforts for the nationally competitive grant.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This grant reflects the common needs and opportunities in our neighbor island communities to connect our students and residents with competencies and possibilities that will be part of our economic future,&rdquo; said Sakamoto, who serves as the principal investigator for the project. &ldquo;It further leverages active partnerships among our colleges and rural communities that address the potential of rural counties in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Enhanced curriculum benefits local workforce and employers<\/h2>\n<p>Programs and courses will be updated, redesigned or introduced in business and accounting, geographic information systems, food innovation and safety, sustainability, electric vehicle automotive, and water\/wastewater treatment. The courses will be delivered in hybrid formats including classroom and online modes with innovative assessment technologies to measure student learning and competencies.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal also strengthens student services by adding staff to assess prior learning experiences, expanding career counseling, and supporting internships and placements. It will also build capacity for tracking the education, training and services impact on students bound for further education or employment.<\/p>\n<p>The program specifically targets workers who may have lost their jobs to overseas competition, as well as unemployed workers, workers seeking jobs requiring higher-level skills, and veterans transitioning to the workforce.<\/p>\n<h2>Funding is part of federal workforce development initiative<\/h2>\n<p>The <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Community Colleges received a <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.edu\/news\/article.php?aId=4694\">similar grant for $24.6 million in September 2011<\/a> as part of the first round of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doleta.gov\/taaccct\">Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training<\/a> initiative, a $2 billion, four-year investment designed to increase opportunities for the unemployed.
