The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs approved the as a training provider under a program that will help provide career opportunities for veteran students.

Vlogٷ West Oʻahu was approved effective March 11, as a provider under the (VRRAP), which offers education and training for high-demand jobs to veterans who are unemployed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’re very pleased to be approved as a provider,” said Jeffrey Moniz, vice chancellor for academic affairs at Vlogٷ West Oʻahu. “Becoming a participating VRRAP educational institution fits very well with our growing efforts to address the needs of our veteran students.”

According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, VRRAP covers education and training programs—including certificate programs—approved under the GI Bill and Veteran Employment Through Technology Education Courses that lead to high-demand jobs. The U.S. Department of Labor determines the criteria for “high-demand job” for VRRAP.

Vlogٷ West ʻ’s approval as a training provider for VRRAP is an important contribution for the state and the Vlogٷ System,” said Debora Halbert, Vlogٷ System vice president for academic strategy. “Vlogٷ West Oʻahu has demonstrated their leadership in this area, and I am excited to see this opportunity open up for veterans living in Hawaiʻi.”

Halbert continued, “With Vlogٷ West ʻ’s inclusion, all Vlogٷ campuses are now on the Department of Veterans Affairs list of approved educational programs.”

Nine certificate programs out of 11 total at Vlogٷ West Oʻahu have been approved for VRRAP:

Those eligible for the VRRAP can get up to 12 months of tuition and fees, and a monthly housing allowance based on Post-9/11 GI Bill rates.

UAH donates to Vlogٷ West Oʻahu’s risk management and insurance program.

The (UAH) donated $11,140 to the University of Hawaiʻi–West Oʻahu program at the organization’s annual charitable golf tournament on July 24 at the Hoakalei Country Club in Ewa Beach.

Other gold and silver level sponsors donated $10,000 from the tournament as well as an additional $1,140 from National Interstate through a prize giveaway. The donation will be used for student scholarships and program development.

The risk management and insurance certificate program at Vlogٷ West Oʻahu provides training for risk management, personal and commercial insurance professionals, and prepares students for licensure examination.

“Once again, the Underwriters Association of Hawaiʻi has generously donated to Vlogٷ West Oʻahu, allowing the university to continue to offer scholarships for risk management and insurance students,” said Vlogٷ West Oʻahu Chancellor Rockne Freitas. “Our program is the only one of its kind in the state. Together with Hawaiʻi’s insurance industry, we are working to provide tomorrow’s insurance professionals with the skills they need to be successful in high-demand careers.”

“The Underwriters Association of Hawaiʻi is committed to the risk management insurance and certificate program at Vlogٷ West Oʻahu to help develop and educate future insurance professionals,” said UAH President Lauren Aoki. “The insurance industry offers a wide variety of career options with great benefits. The (UAH) donated $10,000 to the University of Hawaiʻi–West Oʻahu at the organization’s annual charitable golf tournament on July 26. Participating insurance companies and agencies donated funds that will be used for student scholarships and program development.

The Risk Management and Insurance certificate program provides training for risk management, personal and commercial insurance professionals and prepares students for licensure examination.

“This generous donation from the Underwriters Association of Hawaiʻi allows us to offer additional scholarship support to students pursuing the Risk Management and Insurance certificate program at Vlogٷ West Oʻahu,” said Vlogٷ West Oʻahu Chancellor Rockne Freitas. “It’s a win, win situation because our graduates go on to careers in the insurance industry where trained professionals are in high demand here and across the nation.”

Vlogٷ West Oʻahu is the only university in the state to offer a certificate in risk management and insurance. The certificate program was created in partnership with Hawaiʻi’s risk management and insurance industry to meet the ever-increasing demand for qualified insurance professionals, and develop the skilled professionals needed in a field that offers high starting salaries, job stability, impressive opportunities for future career growth, and a balanced lifestyle.

“I can’t thank our fellow industry association, UAH, enough for their strong support and such generous donation,” said President of the Ron McQuaid. “Being the first of its kind and only insurance certificate curriculum in Hawaiʻi, this support will help ensure the growth of the program.”
