At the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo, learning is moving beyond the classroom and gaining national attention.

Two faculty members, Xuan Xie and Olga Sideleva, have been selected for a competitive national cohort focused on civic learning and economic opportunity. The initiative is led by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities in partnership with Public Agenda. Only 15 educators were chosen in the country.

ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½ Hilo is the only university with two representatives.

The program brings faculty together to redesign courses to help students connect what they learn with real careers, while strengthening ties to their communities.

Community marketing

Xie, an assistant professor in the ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½ Hilo , has already been doing that. In her marketing course, students work directly with Hawaiʻi Island businesses.

“I am passionate about integrating community-engaged learning into my curriculum,” she said. “I hope this program empowers me to create impactful, community-centered learning experiences that enhance students’ economic mobility.”

Her approach reflects ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½ Hilo’s overall mission, said Todd Inouye, director of the College of Business and Economics.

“That’s especially meaningful in a rural community where employment rates and educational attainment lag other parts of the state.”

Ocean learning

Sideleva is bringing that same mindset to science as a biology lecturer in the (CNHS). She is reworking her oceanography course to focus on real-world application, from environmental research to career pathways on Hawaiʻi Island.

“Through this approach, students learn to see oceanography not only as an academic discipline, but as a meaningful tool for civic responsibility, sustainable economic opportunity, and community well-being on Hawaiʻi Island,” Sideleva said.

“CNHS is committed to curricula that embrace community engagement across our programs — whether to advance environmental and cultural protection of ʻÄå¾±²Ô²¹, social justice, or economic development,” said CNHS Dean Simon Kattenhorn.

Both faculty will bring new strategies back to Hilo, preparing students for careers and community service.

Fall 2017 tuition payment deadline is August 30

Tuition and fees for students registering July 26 to August 30, 2017 must be paid in full or enrollment in the ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½ Installment Payment Plan by Wednesday, August 30, 2017, 4 p.m. (HST). If full payment or enrollment in the ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½ Installment Payment Plan is not posted to your MyÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½ account by Wednesday, August 30, 2017, 4 p.m. (HST), you will have a financial obligation and a hold will be placed on your account. Please refer to the Fall 2017 Registration Guide for detailed information.

Full payment can be made by MasterCard, VISA or any credit card accepted by the Discover Network such as Discover, Diners and JCB, pinless debit card or web check (checking or savings account) or sign up for the Installment Payment Plan over the web by connecting to . Check payments can be mailed to University of Hawaiʻi Cashier’s Office, 2600 Campus Road, QLCSS 105, Honolulu, HI 96821-2222.

Students should allow a minimum of 5 days for mail delivery to meet the payment deadline. Students should use the Mail-In Payment Remittance Form in the Fall 2017 Registration Guide to mail in their payment. Campus mail and drop off payments are not accepted. Payment by cash or check can be made in person at the Cashier’s Office, Student Services Center, First Floor, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. For students’ convenience, the Cashier’s Office will have extended window service hours from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on August 30, 2017.

Students who are due a refund should verify their mailing address is correct and sign up for eRefund on their MyÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½ portal.

Fall 2017 faculty and staff tuition waivers

Eligible University of Hawaiʻi employees (this does not apply to graduate assistants) may enroll in credit courses in the university system and use a Faculty/Staff Tuition Waiver to pay for a maximum of 6 credit hrs per semester. Employees must first apply for admission (submit a ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½ Admission Application Form to the Admissions Office) by the appropriate deadline and be admitted before registering for classes.

Employees should disregard the scheduled registration time given to them by MyÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½ since Faculty/Staff Tuition Waivers are valid only for classes registered during the late registration period (August 21 to August 30). Employees must register on MyÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½. Faculty and staff who register before the late registration period will be assessed all applicable tuition and fees. No refunds will be made.

Tuition and fees must be paid in full by Wednesday, August 30, 2017, 4 p.m. (HST). Absolute last day to process Fall 2017 Faculty/Staff/Spouse/Domestic Partner Tuition Waivers will be Monday, September 11, 2017, 3:30 p.m. (HST). Fall 2017 tuition payment deadline

Tuition and fees for students registering April 19 to July 21, 2017 must be paid in full or enrollment in the ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½ Installment Payment Plan by Friday, July 21, 2017, 4 p.m. (HST). ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½ Installment Payment Plan will be offered starting July 1, 2017; see portal for details. If full payment or enrollment in the ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½ Installment Payment Plan is not POSTED to your MyÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½ account by Friday, July 21, 2017, 4 p.m. (HST), your registration may be cancelled.

Note: If you are a fall 2017 financial aid recipient, please disregard the July 21 deadline, your deadline is Wednesday, August 30, 2017, 4 p.m. (HST). Please refer to the Fall 2017 Registration Guide for detailed information.

Fall 2017 faculty and staff tuition waivers


Eligible University of Hawaiʻi employees (this does not apply to graduate assistants) may enroll in credit courses in the university system and use a Faculty/Staff Tuition Waiver to pay for a maximum of 6 credit hrs per semester. Employees must first apply for admission (submit a ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½ Admission Application Form to the Admissions Office) by the appropriate deadline and be admitted before registering for classes.

Employees should disregard the scheduled registration time given to them by since Faculty/Staff Tuition Waivers are valid only for classes registered during the Late Registration Period August 21 to August 30. Employees must register on MyÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½ web site. Faculty and staff who register before the late registration period will be assessed all applicable tuition and fees. No refunds will be made.

Tuition and fees must be paid in full by Wednesday, August 30, 2017, 4 p.m. (HST). Absolute last day to process Fall 2017 Faculty/Staff/Spouse/Domestic Partner Tuition Waivers will be Monday, September 11, 2017, 3:30 p.m. (HST). The Hawaiʻi Women’s Health Research Center is seeking clinical participants for two research studies.

E4 Freedom clinical research study

If you are a woman between 16–50 years old and you require contraception, you may be eligible to participate in the .

This study is evaluating how safe and effective the study pill is at preventing pregnancy, and what periods are like during the menstrual cycle while taking it. Your well-being will be monitored throughout.

To be eligible you must:

• be a heterosexual active female
• require contraception for at least a year
• be a non-smoker (if you are older than 35 years)
• be in good physical and mental health

By taking part in this study you could make an important contribution to clinical research into contraception.

LevoCept clinical research study

Recruitment is ongoing for a clinical research study that will study the safety and effectiveness of an investigational, hormonal method of birth control.

Purpose of the study

• To study the safety and effectiveness of LevoCept in preventing pregnancy
• To identify if LevoCept has any effect on normal menstrual periods and bleeding
• To assess how subjects tolerate LevoCept use

Spring 2017 tuition payment deadline: December 9

Tuition and fees for students registering November 21 to December 9, 2016 must be paid in full or enrollment in the ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½ Installment Payment Plan by Friday, December 9, 2016, 4 p.m. (HST). ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½ Installment Payment Plan will be offered starting November 1, 2016; see for details. If full payment or enrollment in the Installment Payment Plan is not made by December 9, 4 p.m. (HST), your registration may be cancelled. Note: If you are a spring 2017 financial aid recipient, please disregard the December 9th deadline, your deadline is Wednesday, January 18, 2017, 4 p.m. (HST). Please refer to the Spring 2017 Registration Guide for detailed information.

Full payment or enrollment in the Installment Payment Plan must be posted to your MyÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½ account by December 9, 2016, 4 p.m. (HST). Payment can be made by MasterCard, VISA or any credit card accepted by the Discover Network such as Discover, Diners and JCB, pinless debit card or web check (checking or savings account) or sign up for the Installment Payment Plan over the web by connecting to . Please allow the system 5 business days to verify your checking or savings account. Your bank account must be verified prior to making an online payment or enrolling in the Installment Payment Plan.

Check payments can be mailed to , 2600 Campus Road, QLCSS 105, Honolulu, HI 96822-2222. Students should allow a minimum of 5 days for mail delivery to meet the payment deadline. Students should use the Mail-In Payment Remittance Form in the registration guide to mail in their payment. Campus mail and drop off payments are not accepted. Payment by cash or check can be made in person at the Cashier’s Office, Student Services Center, First Floor, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. For students’ convenience, the Cashier’s Office will have extended window service hours from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on December 9, 2016.

Students who are due a refund should verify their mailing address is correct and sign up for eRefund on their MyÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½ portal.

Spring 2017 faculty and staff tuition waivers


Eligible University of Hawaiʻi employees (this does not apply to graduate assistants) may enroll in credit courses in the university system and use a Faculty/Staff Tuition Waiver to pay for a maximum of 6 credit hrs per semester. Employees must first apply for admission (submit a ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½ Admission Application Form to the Admissions Office) by the appropriate deadline and be admitted before registering for classes.

Employees should disregard the scheduled registration time given to them by MyÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½ since Faculty/Staff Tuition Waivers are valid only for classes registered during the Late Registration Period January 9 to January 18. Employees must register on MyÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½ web site. Faculty and staff who register before the late registration period will be assessed all applicable tuition and fees. No refunds will be made.

Tuition and fees must be paid in full by Wednesday, January 18, 2017, 4 p.m. (HST). Absolute last day to process spring 2017 Faculty/Staff/Spouse/Domestic Partner Tuition Waivers will be Monday, January 30, 2017, 3:30 p.m. (HST).
