Professor Henry E. Smith, an authority on intellectual property and patent law, will present the 2016 Distinguished Gifford Lecture in Real Property at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa’s on November 10, 4:30–5:30 p.m. in the Moot Court Room. The lecture—“Property Law as a System”—is free and open to the public.
Smith is the Fessenden Professor of Law at Harvard, where he directs the Project on the Foundation of Private Law. He has written extensively on the law and economics of property and intellectual property, with a focus on how property-related institutions lower information costs and constrain behavior.
Smith teaches primarily in the areas of property, intellectual property, natural resources, remedies and law and economics.
The Gifford Lecture, sponsored by the , offers annual lectures by outstanding national authorities on property law. It was established in 2002 by the to honor the superior real property work of David L. Callies, the Benjamin A. Kudo Professor of Law, and prominent local attorney Jerry M. Hiatt.
