They will interact with the inmates and help them with their library needs. They will be handling mostly legal reference questions, such as locating case laws and statutes for inmates. They will learn to use the Lexis-Nexis legal database.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:8px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Library\/Collection Description<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Department of Public Safety has eight facilities and provides eight libraries, one in each facility. O\u02bbahu: Halawa Correctional Facility; O\u02bbahu Community Correctional Center; Women\u2019s Community Correctional Center; Waiawa Correctional Facility; Hawai\u02bbi (Big Island): Hawai\u02bbi Community Correctional Center; Kulani Correctional Facility; Maui: Maui Community Correctional Center; Kaua\u02bbi: Kaua\u02bbi Community Correctional Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:8px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Required Qualifications<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>LIS 605 Metadata Creation for Information Organization<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>LIS 615 Collection Management<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:8px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Desired Qualifications<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Know how to adhere to rules and regulations. Be comfortable working in groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:8px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Weekly Schedule<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Any time between 6:30 a.m.&nbsp;\u2013 4:00&nbsp;p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:8px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Goals and Outcomes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the unique prison environment the intern will see how scheduling inmates is done and how to run a prison recreation library. Some basic cataloging using the Dewey Decimal Classification&nbsp;system. They will also learn how to keep statistics of library usage, and do report writing. The intern will come in close proximity with inmates and will learn how to handle inmates\u2019 requests with close supervision by a librarian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The intern will learn to work with different professionals: security, social workers, and administrative staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:8px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Evaluation Methods<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The intern will be evaluated on an ongoing basis; how she\/he relates to the inmates, how she\/he relates to the library staff, and how he adheres to the security measures in the facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:8px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Evaluation Schedule<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There will be a verbal assessment, a discussion with the intern in the middle of the session followed with a written evaluation of the intern at the end of internship.
