Internship Description
The intern will have opportunities to gain practical knowledge and experience in library instruction, tutorial design, assessment, reference, and collection development. Special consideration will be given to LIS students possessing or seeking experience with native Hawaiian constituents 鈥 the Library is working closely with the college鈥檚 and the Waianae campus to support native Hawaiian student success.
Library/Collection Description
Leeward Community College supports a diverse student body of approximately 7500 students on both its main campus overlooking Pearl Harbor and at a satellite campus on the Waianae Coast. The Library鈥檚 General Collection contains approximately 70000 print volumes and more than 80000 ebooks selected to support the college鈥檚 associate degree and certificate programs. include the Reference, ESL, Hawaiian/Pacific, and Juvenile collections.
Required Qualifications
- LIS 601 Introduction to Reference & Information Services
Desired Qualifications
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work in a professional and cooperative manner with librarians, instructors, and staff
- Ability to take independent action and work with minimal supervision
Weekly Schedule
Internship hours will be scheduled during the library鈥檚 operational hours, including evenings.
Goals and Outcomes
- Introduction to and experience with supporting a growing information literacy program
- Experience in creating and delivering assessment
- Ability to deliver professional reference services to students and faculty
- Knowledge of collection development
- Demonstrated sensitivity of native Hawaiian constituent needs in all internship functions and tasks
Evaluation Methods
Verbal and written feedback will be provided to the intern on an ongoing basis; the LIS 690 evaluation form will be completed by the supervising librarian.
Evaluation Schedule
A formal evaluation based upon the LIS 690 evaluation form will be provided at the end of the semester.
