ELI students work with experienced instructors to develop their academic English skills, and learn about useful learning strategies and resources. While taking ELI courses, these students take a limited number of other university courses here at 糖心Vlog官方M.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e069d9024e6528092c51dc64982a640e is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:700\"><summary>\u25b8How does the ELI decide who does (and who does not) need ELI courses?<\/summary>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-4a00383da96a09204cd0df22f22ccef1\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\">On the ELI website, we have a list of criteria for automatic exemption from ELI requirements at the following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/eli\/courses\/what-are-my-eli-requirements\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/eli\/courses\/what-are-my-eli-requirements\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>link<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. The Office of Admissions reviews the information you sent when you applied to 糖心Vlog官方M to see if you met any of these exemption criteria. Based on that information, the ELI places a &#8220;registration hold&#8221; on students who have not met any of the exemption criteria. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-4f4bce8fae206741fbbf60067661d693\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\">Students who are not exempt are required to take the ELI Placement Test. Some students do well enough on the test to be completely exempt, and others are placed into ELI courses. The ELI also places a different hold on new undergraduate students who are exempt but still need to take ESL 100 in order to fulfill the General Education &#8220;FW&#8221; requirement. (&#8220;FW&#8221; means &#8220;Foundations in Written Communication&#8221;.)<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-9d46206ca6f9936b74a91463fc6fc856 is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:700\"><summary>\u25b8How can I clear the ELI&#8217;s registration hold?<\/summary>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">There are three ways to clear the ELI\u2019s hold:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\"><em>Provide proof of meeting ELI exemption criteria. <\/em>&nbsp;Contact the ELI and let us know which of the exemption criteria you meet.&nbsp; In particular, those students who have 6 years or more of schooling in an English-speaking country can fill out and submit this <a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1HI5eSDOFJ1ZjvDN7IRfPclVENe1Ion_K\/edit__;!!PvDODwlR4mBZyAb0!UEoz7lBD45UfIct4mqm3Pa3IRAUo1VnrN0-oeIeHVD9tFxNGF5t4EloJKBn2v9wVUCUZADVcSecQHD8fBQ$\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>form<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\"><em>Sign up for the ELI Placement Test.<\/em>\u00a0 We offer the test the week before school starts and again in the evening during Week 1 of the semester (only for students who are late to arrive in Hawai\u2018i).\u00a0 To sign up for our test, go to this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/eli\/placement-test\/register\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>link<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\"><em>If your hold says to take ESL 100. <\/em>&nbsp;These students <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">do not<\/span> have to take our test; they only need to fulfill the \u201cFW\u201d requirement by taking ESL 100 in their first year at 糖心Vlog官方M (preferably in your first semester).&nbsp; Please contact the ELI&nbsp; and let us know when you will take ESL 100.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-6d89fb369d7d9eee7de8455f07af0ce5 is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:700\"><summary>\u25b8What does each hold mean?<\/summary>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\">Holds are placed on students that are flagged to take ELI courses. All students who have English as their second language must clear the ELI by either taking the ELI placement test, which is held at the beginning of the Spring and Fall semesters, or following the instructions below. Based on your scores on the test, you will be placed into ELI courses or exempted from them. These courses <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/eli\/courses\/course-completion\/\">must be completed within your first two semesters<\/a> at 糖心Vlog官方 Manoa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\">If the hold says &#8220;<strong>ELI Placement Test,<\/strong>&#8221; please <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/eli\/placement-test\/register\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>sign up for the test at this page<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. After we receive your registration, we will remove your hold within three business days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\">If the hold says &#8220;<strong>ELI Placement Test, no writing,<\/strong>&#8221; this is because you have been fully exempted from the writing section of the ELI Placement test as well as any further writing courses at 糖心Vlog官方 M\u0101noa. However, you are still required to take the remaining sections of the test, so please <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/eli\/placement-test\/register\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>sign up for the test at this page<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. However, we can only use those scores if they are official, so be sure that you have official test results sent to 糖心Vlog官方 M\u0101noa Office of Admissions for every time you take a test. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\">If you score lower than the exemption threshold, your scores will be used alongside your ELI Placement Test scores to place you into the highest level ELI courses possible. Please <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/eli\/courses\/what-are-my-eli-requirements\/#tests\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">see this page for a full list of standardized tests<\/span><\/strong><\/a> that the ELI recognizes, and the scores required to be exempted. If you have taken a standardized test, please ensure that your scores are submitted to the admissions department and are showing in your STAR report. If you have taken one recently, you may send official scores to uhmeli@hawaii.edu as proof of your exemption status.
