Dr. Gwen Jacobs, the Co-Director of the Hawai\u02bbi Data Science Institute, gave a presentation on the topic of<\/span>\u00a0“The Hawai’i Data Science Institute: a Nexus for Data Science Education, Multidisciplinary Research and Partnership with Industry<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n

Abstract:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Hawai’i Data Science Institute is a University of Hawaii Systemwide initiative to support and promote data science education, multidisciplinary research, and workforce development. Data science skills are among the most sought-after abilities for careers in academia, business and industry, entrepreneurship, and technology innovation.\u00a0 This seminar will describe the history and accomplishments of the institute, opportunities for collaborative research, education, and training programs, and plans for future growth.<\/p>\n

Bio:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dr. Gwen Jacobs is the Director of Cyberinfrastructure for the University of Hawai\u2018i System, where she leads efforts to support data-intensive research with advanced cyberinfrastructure for the University of Hawai\u02bbi research community.\u00a0 She directs the State of Hawai\u2018i EPSCoR Program and serves as Co-Director of the Hawai\u02bbi Data Science Institute. Her research accomplishments and interests span computational neuroscience, informatics, software tools for data management analysis and visualization, campus cyberinfrastructure, and regional and national networking initiatives.<\/p>\n

Prior to coming to ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½, she served as a Professor of Neuroscience, Department Head of Cell Biology and Neuroscience, Director of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Undergraduate Biology Education program, and Asst. Chief Information Officer and Director of Research Computing at Montana State University. Her work has been continuously funded by the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health for more than 30 years. She has been actively engaged in science policy at the national level throughout her career. Recently, she served as a member and Chair of the NSF Advisory Committee for Cyberinfrastructure (2016 -2020), a member of the NSF Committee of ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½ors for the Office of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure (2022), a member and chair of the external advisory board for NSF Earthcube, General Chair of PEARC20 and is an active member of the Campus Research Computing Consortium.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
