A growing body of research<br \/>suggests involving bystanders in interventions to combat deviant<br \/>behaviors. In this paper, we contextualize the bystander intervention<br \/>framework and reporting literature to social media in order to<br \/>understand why bystanders report social media harassment. Our<br \/>contextualized intervention framework focuses on three sociotechnical<br \/>aspects\u2014the online social environment, characteristics of the<br \/>technology platform, and their interplay\u2014that shape bystander<br \/>reporting on social media platforms. We tested the model using data<br \/>gathered from 291 active Facebook users. We found that four<br \/>contextualized factors, (1) perceived emergency of the social media<br \/>harassment incident, (2) perceived responsibility to report, (3)<br \/>perceived self-efficacy in using built-in reporting functions, and (4)<br \/>perceived outcome effectiveness of built-in reporting functions for<br \/>tackling social media harassment, shaped bystanders\u2019 willingness to<br \/>intervene against social media harassment. In addition, we showed that<br \/>perceived anonymity of the reporting system counterbalances the<br \/>negative influence of the presence of others on bystanders\u2019<br \/>willingness to intervene. For research, we contribute to the<br \/>cyberbullying literature by offering a novel sociotechnical<br \/>explanation of mechanisms that shape bystanders\u2019 willingness to report<br \/>social media harassment. For practice, we offer insight into how to<br \/>build safer and secure social media platforms for all users.<\/p><p>Bio:<\/p><p>Prof. Bo Sophia Xiao is a Shidler College Distinguished Associate<br \/>Professor (Endowed)<br \/>in the Information Technology Management Department.
